Weight Management

Weight management is more than a weight loss plan - it is a series of changes for better health.

If your pet has some extra pounds, they are not alone. Studies have shown that over 50% of cats and 25% of dogs are overweight. Trying to get your pet to lose weight on your own can be frustrating when you don’t see results. Not to worry, we offer a comprehensive weight loss program. Although having a heavier pet is normalized and considered adorable, there are many health risks that can lower your pet’s quality of life and eventually shorten their lifespan.

How do I know if my pet is overweight?

The best way to know if your pet is overweight is to have a veterinarian examine them. Many pet owners aren’t aware, but all pets have an ideal weight determined by their breed, species and age. Our veterinarians will weigh your pet and compare this to their ideal weight. If your pet is less than 20% over the ideal weight, they are classified as overweight. And more than 20% means that your pet is obese.

What health problems are common in overweight pets?

Excess weight weakens your pet’s immune system, making them prone to developing diseases. Overweight and obese pets are at risk of having the following disorders:

  1. Pancreatitis
  2. Diabetes
  3. Cancer
  4. Heart and lung disease
  5. Osteoarthritis
  6. Skin problems

How can you help my pet lose weight?

Our team has created the Pounds Off Pets program designed to help pets get to a healthy weight. A veterinarian will examine your pet and run tests to rule out medical causes for their weight gain. We then begin to work with pet owners to develop a personalized weight loss plan that will include a special diet, weigh-ins, limiting treats and adding different forms of exercise. Once the goal weight is achieved, we continue to provide support by recommending new ways to maintain that weight.
