Starting at 6-8 weeks, vaccination provides your kitten with protection against harmful diseases.
Vaccines lay a good foundation for your pet’s life by strengthening their immune system. At our hospital, we’ve created a thorough feline wellness program that begins with vaccinations. When your pet is vaccinated, a small amount of virus is introduced to their body which teaches their immune system how to respond to future exposures. The vaccines given to pets are completely safe and have gone through various rounds of testing to ensure they are effective.
In general, cats begin vaccination at a very early age. Kittens are vaccinated when they are 6 to 8-weeks-old. Different doses are administered every 3 or 4 weeks until they are 16-weeks-old. As an adult, your cat may need boosters every 1 to 3 years. Our team will inform you when your pet is due for their booster shots.
The vaccines your cat may need are divided into two categories known as either core or non-core vaccines. Core vaccines are mandatory for all pets because, without them, your pet can catch deadly diseases that spread very easily. Core vaccines your cat needs are Rabies and FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis Calicivirus and Panleukopenia).
Your veterinarian may recommend non-core vaccines based on your pet’s risk of exposure. We consider your pet’s vaccine history, surroundings and if they travel. Some of these vaccines may include Feline Leukemia Virus, Feline Chlamydia and Feline Bordetella.
This varies according to the pet; it’s normal that some pets will have a mild reaction. These reactions may include swelling at the injection site, loss of appetite, diarrhea, fever or vomiting. There is no need to worry as these symptoms will clear up within a day or two; however, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any concerns about your pet’s vaccines.
